Default :HighLand Elk:

This past Sat.while watching the football games,I wanted to carve something and went out to my shop and grabed this old cutting board.

It was well used, slits and cuts all over it but I knew once I carved into it deeper,Id loose most of them. I was just going to carve something in the middle of this board but MG this carving grew and grew!

Sunday afternoon once again I was still carving on this quick and simple relief carving---------YEA RIGHT! LOL{Lots Of Luck}-----4-rest

The first problem I had when I carved deeper into this well used old cutting board was, there was alot of oil that had build up inside this wood, from years of oils from the different things that was cut on this maple board. It was stone dry but the oil had made this area like a sponge. Once I carved deeper again I lost that and found some nice wood to carve.

The mtns on the left and the hemlock trees, thats not smoke or snow, its the mist that rises over the higher mtns. I can see this welcome mist on the mtns in my area from my back porch, its like the mtns are yawning saying,Good Morning.

This relief carving is 13 X 18 inches, painted with acrylic paints.

Hope you enjoy this old Elk and your thoughts or comments are always welcome. Thks' Forrest

Very nice, I like the way you painted it alot. I live in mn and we are at the edge of a very large tamarack swamp, we get the same kind of fog/mist in the mornings alot sometimes it will hang around untill noon.

Hi Forrest,

Looks like you've nailed another one! This is one beautiful piece you've done here. Love the elk, and the way you've done the mountains and trees. Living up on this part of Mass we get the mist from the lakes rising up into what we'd call mountains here, even if they're not very high. I can see the highest peaks in Mass from my yard though.

Hey, what'd you use for the undercutting? It sure looks great!

Keep 'em coming, Forrest. I sure do like to see your work.

Mark

Carver/Turner Yea theres mist or fog at swamps and lakes in alot of areas. I like it in the mtns the best, its strange not seeing the base of a mtn and the top just stickn up there, as if its just floating. Thanks for your nice compliment & input. Forrest

Mark, the under cutting?? I call it laying the wood back which makes everything else stand up and its comes forward. I dont know the proper words for alot of things. I use a home made gouge like tool that I can remove wood faster with like on the back ground plus I sand it till my hand is throbling, for I try to get it as smooth as I can. The rest of the carving is carved with chisels, gouges, knives, files and some antq cobber tools Ive reshaped. My relief carvings are done this way, carving in the round as I call it,I use only knives. Ive not been to Mass, but theres alot of places that has that mist or fog. In the deserts, its better known as HEAT rising!

I appreciate your question and your nice compliments Mark. Thanks again,Forrest
