Hi gang, I have just recieved my new issue of WCI and was looking thru it and came across a couple of items I was interested in and was wondering if any of you have them or have had any feed back on them. The first was the High Speed Rotary Chisel http://www,rotarychisel.com it is used on power carvers over 30,000 RPM just wondering if any one had used one and your opinion. The other was the Mini Kutzall Extreme Dish Wheel that fits on the Arbortech mini grinder it comes in Black, Blue and Salmon if you have used this how is it for clogging up? I know most of the Kutzall tools are good for not clogging. Just curious before I purchase them as they are quite expensive. Colin

Colin, I had the opportunity to use the rotary chisel this month. It is a wonderful tool to use, I prefer the '101A', but I carve smaller 12' carvings. The bit removes wood quickly and cleanly with good control. The '101A' at $27.00 is a good buy. You would probably want the largest of the offered tools; I believe it gives you a 3/4' deep cut. I may even add them to my next catalog! |

The type of tool you describe can be dangerous. First a disclaimer. I sell a three carbide cutter only for duplicarvers. They are used in hand pieces in Europe, however, I refuse to sell them to hand carvers. Should you drop it, there are two interesting blood vessels ,one in each leg that could be severed. What makes the tool safe is a depth limiting bearing that only allows you to go down so far and ,in doing so, prevents binding , the tool bit doing a ninety degree bend, and come flying out at some ungodly rpm. If you imagine a wheel on an axle (at speed),it will work as long as you go in a direct line. Once you dig in ,and cock the axle, all hell will break loose. Any reason work shifting,a sneeze. I have heard of several and know of one gal this happened to. The tool was an 1/8 inch shaft. This going to be an oxymoron, to make what is an unsafe tool safer, put it in as far as it will go into the handpiece. While on a good track to get people mad at me, have you ever considered 6mm shafts on your cutter. 6mm is not a quarter inch. For a hand piece 6 mm will fit in a quarter inch collet, if you tighten down to your normal mode, see if you can't pull the cutter out of the handpiece. Crunch down and you can ruin your collet. Both can have interesting results. I have $800. worth of tungsten carbide burrs for sale, greatest things in the world for stone, poor on wood,.What makes them interesting,is that they are threaded, so once in the handpiece, you unscrew the tip.I borrowed a reverse drive motor, chucked one up,peddle to the middle, and touched to a bit of wood. That burr came off like a road runner cartoon, wanged off my old bandsaw, and went thru a closed window. NOT FOR SALE......Back to 6mm shafts, they are advertised thinking you will assume they are 1/4 inch.Got hurt, well we said 6mm, why didn't you buy the appropriate collet, didn't you know it not kosher to use in 1/4 inch collet? Sorry WE ARE not responsible!!!!! So I am the worlds worst sales person, prefer to carve. However , the thing is that there are many people out there who want to carve, and not be hurt. If you sell something, it is your responsibility to be the expert on the tool. Try that high speed rotary tool down to 3/4 inches and twist side ways(wear armor). How does it cut this? I sell three cutters, tried 22 different woods,3 stones, mastodon ivory, alunimum, silver(pure), My felt wheels come from France, paper, from England, Tungsten carbide rifflers, have the remaining world supply, same with tungsten carbide sandpaper(metal does not dull chisels) Thirsty stones.. I watched a dealer sell a medium felt wheel which was out of round, and take it back because he didn't know how to true it. There are too many fast buck gimmicks out there. Palm tools with 3/4 and 1 inch blades, consider the force required to push, and what happens should it slip! Rifflers, the last bit of nonsence a small carver should buy(they are cheap).. So,if you take the responsibility to sell, maybe the same tack can be taken when you buy something new and want to be first to announe it to the world.. Now that I have gotten my monthly yelling session in, I need some help. I have a web site that is in desperate need of help, I need a wood carver to revamp it. If you are in the business, please get with me . Thank you very much for taking the time to read my post, cordially Nad nadcarves@yahoo.com |

Nad, good post. Lots of info there. I have looked at those rotary chisels, wondering if they'd be good on my Dremel for hollowing the bowl on hardwood spoons. But I was worried about the potential hazard of 'kick back' if it jumped off the wood for some reason. And how many stiches would be required to close the wound. I'm sure in the right envoronment they're a fine tool. I'm just not sure I'm the operator for the job. Perhaps after they have more time on the market and gain a (positive) reputation, then maybe I'll try one.
