Default HELP! I need a few Suggestion!

Next weekend at the Eastern Oklahoma Woodcarvers show in Tulsa, I have been asked to give an hour seminar or discussion on my carving techniques. As I did a seminar on carving two years ago and another on painting at last years show, I'm hurting for new subjects to cover. If any of you could suggest a few things that you might think would be useful I would sure appreciate it.

How about something in the design process, or transferring ideas form your brain to paper to wood...

Another would be to take a specific part of a carving, such as hands, feet, or face, and show how a few cuts can give the piece a totally different look...

Or take in some of your earliest carvings and critique them for the seminar...point out the things that you did wrong and how you would do it differently now that you have more experience...

Man, I'm giving away all my article ideas <grin>

Bob.....Thanks! I have the first western figure I ever carved so I think I will do what you say. I'm trying to get a figure completed up to the point of painting to take along and compareing it to the earlier one will work out great. Thanks!

We often hear people say, "How did you put that presentation together?" I thought that when I looked at your web-site and the tutorials you have there.

So, that is my suggestion. Not so much the computer aspect of developing the presentation for the web-site, but the thinking process in how to successfully present how a carving is done. And while make the presentation on showing someone how to make a carving, you would also be telling how you made the carving. Sort of like telling how to tell a story and telling the story at the same time.

Something that might be helpful to a lot of newer carvers is the "little things" that make a big difference in the finished carving. I have seen a lot of decent carvings, but they need that little some thing to finish them off. Carving and finishing. Actual examples would be grest too. Thanks for the opportunity to voice a suggestion. Tom H

Geez Bob...we using one brain? My thought was about the same, how the initial idea gets to the wood....like those patterns with the grommets Lynn showed awhile back, that the arms and legs etc can be moved to get the position......have been meaning to make some of those myself...but haven't gotten around to finding the grommets.....getting the idea (pattern) to the wood seems to be a problem for many carvers....not just the newbies!

Lynn,
You could always discuss "composition" and how you go about balancing a carving within a scene...
