I bought Jack Price's book on small charactures and I cut the block wrong. I should have left the cut from the nose tip to the neck alone so I had something to work with for a mouth mound. Here is a picture and I'm hoping someone can help me figure out what I can do to save the guy. He almost looks like he's giving a bullheaded look.. like his lower lip could be pulled up under his nose but I dont know what to do for a chin since theres not much under there to work with. Any ideas? I still need to do the clothing and fix that hat..but want to see what facial expresion I end up with first. Thanks. Oh..he's four inches tall.. I wanted to start big and see how I can do JP's beginner guy. If you know of a picture for me to look at for a mouth idea that would help alot too. I just need to know how to do a fat lip, and a weak chin underneath I think. Unless you have a better idea.. I'm all ears. LOL Thanks.

only a suggestion but apperntly your carving a carature, not realistic, charters or cacaratures are known for outlandish features. this one appears to have a lantern jaw, a boxer of sorts, with no pointed chin, he looks very unhappy, so go with what you got .. i downloaded your photo and edited it and in red there is a natural line already started in the carving. go with it, just a v gouge run across will produce the suggestion of a mouth with his lower lip protrouding. pouty looking. like a 20's dock worker. my 2 cents marci thomas

That must be the natural fix, because it's exactly what I thought also. The only thing I can add is that after you make the v cut, take a knife and make a side to side slicing cut straight down along the bottom of the vee (very lightly). No need to remove any wood, just the seperation of the cut will do. This will add to the depth of the vee and add a slight shadow. Them little guys are fun. I do one or two every once in awhile just for fun and/or to try something new that I'm not sure of (including finishing techniques).

What about a big bushy moustache with little or no chin......lots of "weak chin'ed" folks about? Not a mistake, just a design change!!! Smile Bob

Marci: If you go carve in a neck line that will make the chin stand out.Their is more room their then it looks. And then draw a line and form a jaw line back toward the ear area.

He lookd like an old hobo to me , so I agree with the frown looks , or give him the old hobo clown look, and a bristled chin and your fine. Looks like it will be a good piece when your done looking forward to seeing it . Ash |

Looks to me that you've already created most of an expression. As soon as I saw the figure I saw the lower protruding lip. Stick with it! For a couple of examples of this type of expression, check out my gallery on this site. Once you cut out a chip directly under the center of the lower lip you'll see the chin return! Pencil it in first!

I agree Marci, when I looked at your photo I already saw his 'expression' too. Funny how, in carving, sometimes the 'mistake' is just what the piece needs! We'll look forward to seeing him finished! Deborah

| I tend to agree with Bob and carve a bushy mustache and weak chin.

Why not just add a piece of wood to extend his chin. And resume your carving. If his broke off you would add it back.
