Default Help me find a school !!!!

Hi everyone;
Thanks for the big welcome! I will attempt to find some of the pix I have on my hard drive and post them very soon. You can see some of my work on the website, too.

I carve mostly butternut, basswood, driftwood, red cedar. I am finding that here in this coastal town in Florida, my style of carving is not very marketable; folk say that I should carve sea-side creatures like fish, birds, turtles and mermaids. Oh well, I guess I'll give that a try.

I have taken some great carving classes at the Campbell Folk School at Brasstown NC.......I really love it there!

Do you guys know of another good school near North East Florida that might offer other carving classes? I don't mind a 3-5 day class, if it's worthy.

thanks
ch

Hi Banjoman,
I will be watching this thread as I would love to find something closer than North Carolina.... The John Campbel is a great school for folk arts. My parents live five minute from there and I visit the school every time we go there. I hope you get a response to this.

I've been to the J. C. Campbell school the last 3 years. Great education and a great place to unwind. Going again this year in December to Tom Wolfe's week class. They have great facilities for carving. Don't know of any other school other then caricature carving at Dollywood in October or the Smokey Mountain group.

John C. Campbell Folk School is great, I use to go there often with my grandmother when I was kid. I wish that I would have started carving then.
Her name was Sue McClure, she has carvings in the museum and in the archives upstairs in the dinning room. I have a bit of history there and now I
have my own carving in the craft shop. I hope to carry on the family name. My 14 year old son has started carving some, I hope he will continue for years to come. I have never took a class ther but plan on it in the near future.

Yeeooowww! I am still hoping to find a class closer to Jacksonville Florida than Tenn or NC.... I love the area, but it takes sooo long to get there. Any locations close by are certainly welcomed!!!!
