Several years ago my wife and I were given a present of an ornate, scroll work style wood carving of the Biblical verse "In Everything Give Thanks". Unfortunately, it has fallen off the wall a few too many times and is now in "Humpty Dumpty" configuration! I've done the basic Google search but have only been able to locate wood plaques with the verse carved into them. Have not located anything as intricate, detailed, and artistic as the one we had. Is there a special name for this type of wood carving and does anyone know where I might locate it? Of course, I'm trying to find one for a Christmas present so time is getting tight. My bad! So can you help a procrastinating husband out?

Since you said that you had located "plaques with the verse carved into them", I think we are going to need more information as to what your carving was like. Your description of "ornate, scroll work syle" sounds like relief carving. But, that is the way we would describe the plaques with the verse carved into them. There are certainly members on the Forum that can do the type of carving in which you are interested. But, to get something laid out, carved, and to you by Christmas is virtually an impossible undertaking. My suggestion would be to take some photos of your "humty dumpty" piece and post them here with a request for someone interested in carving. It would be best to list your email address and have them contact you "off list". Good luck! |

Hi Joe, It sounds like something that could be scroll sawn like a lierced carving. You might want to check the Scroll Saw Board.

The Quote:
Also, my wife believes that our carving was done with a laser. Does that seem right? I'm sorry, just not able to provide a picture. For our carving the letters were "stand alone" with no backing behind them and floral scroll work around the ends. I guess it would be similar to relief carving but also keep in mind that there were full depth, open air spaces between the letters. Also, the front face of the letters were also undulating, that is to say not flat. I guess I'm just not no good describing the visuals! EDIT: Okay, see the attached images to get a better idea what I'm talking about. Our carving is like the Bible verse but with the relief detail of the second photo. Hope that helps. Hi Joe, Your picture on the right is called a pierced relief carving. I think Ron T just hit the wrong letter. Have you looked into having "Humpty Dumpty" restored? Loretta |
