i want to carve something out of clear quartz rock but i've never carved any rock to mount to anything i've drilled holes in rock w/ carbid a/ bits for drilling glass that worked fairly well. i use dremel in just about all my carv'ins i have diamond tip bits but they wear out real quick@ $5 a pc.thats more money than i want to spend if so i will stick to my wood carv'ins or make it out of bone, horn . i like the ivory look finshed w/ oil |

well there is a lot of stuff in your message there and quite hard for me to follow but ill try. your right the only thing that will cut quarts is diamond. if your just wanting it cut straight (per your mount referance) you could use a tile wet saw... as far as the rest of your message im not sure if there was a question in there or not.

Take a look at the tools that I recently used to carve quartz with. That Hilti hammer drill will drill, hammer drill and just hammer with a carbide point it can destroy the hardest stone. That diamond cup grinding wheel cuts very fast as fast as a chainsaw disc on a side grinder. Look closely and you can see a tiny diamond wheel that will fit your dremel it cuts fast as well. The wheel that is on the side grinder is a masonry dry cut diamond cutting wheel cuts very fast. The assortment of segmented discs are for smoothing and final polishing of any type of stone. Make sure you wear a dust mask rock dust is unhealthy. One more tip, you can glue the stone to a block of wood with liquid nails so it can be held in your vise.

donsexton, a have the dremel wheel that u show a/ 30 diam. tip bits for it round, cone points, ect but they wear out very easy, i wander if i put them in water they may last longer. i may try that! i havn't started it yet. it was just a idea right now. i like to do it in quartz i think that it would look right nice. to carve a animal in a pc. 1.1/2x3/4 round it would be like a clear salt when it was done , i have a diam. wheel for the side grinder[4.1/2] i may strap it down a/ grind some of the shapes, iv'e used it to cut concrete it may last longer then the dremel wheel, i have used the fiber wheels to shape blue stone thanks for your help! chipmunk... |

i have carved more stone than wood, but quartz have allways intimidated me, i have tried obsidian and jade that are just as hard. and i would use nothing but dymond blades, (not the cheap 5 dollar ones) and as for the hilti drill, just keep in mind quartz react a lot like glass and any pounding action can easilly shutter your piece. good luck and don't forget to show your results. cheers |
