Default help with buffalo headdress

I'm doing a native american with a buffalo headdress, it is the same size as a Jeff Phares mask. I don't want to carve the horns seperatly, but i'm really having a time trying to place them correctly. I have thought of a clay model but don't want to buy all that clay because won't use it much after this project. any help would be appreciated thankyou.

If you go to my Blog and look in the archive list under June 2006 you'll find a post titled "Indians" which shows a Chief in a Buffalo Headress photo of a carving I did. If you go to the photo gallery associated with this post, it's on page 7, you'll find other photos of this headress, painted and unpainted.
