Default Help!

Carelessly rushing to get a block fixed ready for carving club last night, I put the Carvers Screw in the wrong place.

Now with much of the work finished, I hit the screw, fortunately doing little damage to my gouge.

I have only about 1/8 inch to carve off yet. The wood is mahogany, so crumbly and of course the inside of the hole will NOT have smooth sides..........

How can I fill the screw hole so that the minimum of the patch shows?

Drill hole, and then fit up a mahogany plug/dowel (you will have to turn down a small piece of mahogany--probably can be done in a hand drill in a vise and turned i.e. coarse/medium sandpaper or file by hand) When you have the piece sized and grain matched as best as possible, then glue in.

That's the best I can come up with.

Good luck!

I agree with Bob.

I'd take a piece of the mahogany scrap with the grain running the same way as the main piece of wood. Drill out the hole with whatever size drill bit is the smallest that will do the job. Carve the mahogany scrap to a little bigger than the hole. Chuck the stick in your drill, turn on relatively slow, and using sandpaper, slowly work the dowel down to the correct diameter. Apply some white glue and tap the dowel into place. Try to orient the grain of the dowel so it runs in the same direction as the main wood grain. While the glue is damp, use a wet paper towel to wipe off any excess that leaks out through the holes.
