I had an opportunity to try one of these out the other day on a trip I made. I went with a friend of mine to his local dealer who had one and let us play with it. He also said they were back ordered. Anyway, I was going to buy one when they became available and even put it on my christmas list. Once I tried it I changed my mind. I did not like the bulk in my hand and didn't feel the control I have with my palm gouges. It did seem to be well built and the dealer did have it sharp so it cut pretty easy on basswood. I for one will stick to my individual hand tools. Cheers Ric |

Oh, thanks Ric, we sure do appreciate your good advice. Curtis is now rethinking this issue. If it is bulky, and one doesn't have the control as well, then he might want some more new knives or gouges... The best way to know is from someone who has had some experience. We all appreciate your comments. Curtis and Charlotte

Although not as compact as the Carvin' Jack, the Cape Forge Mini-set is small enough to fit in a pocket (barely) and has 5 very nice tools. I have actually made several more tools to fit the handle, extending the usefulness of the basic kit. The Carvin' Jack knife reminds me of a Swiss Army knife. I have several of them and upon reflection, I cannot remember when I had to use the awl, the bottle opener, the can opener, the corkscrew, and a few others whose designed function eludes me. Warren Cutlery has some fairly nice knife-gouge combo sets that are very suitable for travel and probably more functional (and less expensive).

Thanks Captain Bandaid for the information on the knives, Curtis has decided that the Carvin' Jack isn't what he wants now that we have the good information from the guys on the message board. Maybe he will settle for some new knives. Thanks Big Wayne that's a great list of the stores and we will check those catalogs out.. We appreciate all your trouble listing the places and addresses. We will have fun checking them out. Everyone is so nice on this message board to help people that are needing information. I think we have been prevented from making a costly mistake. I am sure the Carving Jack is good for those who travel, but we do our carving and painting at home.. Now that we know that it is a bulky knife, it just doesn't seem practicle for home use.. Guess I will find something else for the carver here. Thanks again... Charlotte and Curtis
