Default Hawaiian Koa

Has anyone ever tried to carve Hawaiian Koa (Acacia Koa)? I'm particularly interested in how successful incised lettering would be in this type of wood.

Yes I use Koa to carve in....just because it is so beautiful grains, ...it machines great and I do use my chisel on it. Never put lettering into it.....make sure what ever you use is super sharp.

Awesome! Thanks for the advice! I'll definitely put this on my list of woods to try out.

Do you know by chance if it has tight grain? And how would you rate it's hardness?...compared to...oak...

The tree that are here,..... grow super fast and some slower depending on the rain and what season it is....but you can see trees grow well over 14 feet a year. Koa is a fast growing tree...Koa is about as hard as walnut. It is harder than teak, and sometimes harder than maple. The hardness of Koa, like any wood from here....., varies a great deal.... I have had extreme examples of super hard all the way to about the same pine.
