Default What I have learned so far...

Although I've only just started chipping I've learned a few things in my short time.

1. Hone your tools till they gleam, and then hone some more.
2. There is always room for one more tool.
3. When someone offers you a hunk of cedar, mind what they consider a hunk.
4. Bass wood is stronger than it looks.
5. Your fingers are not as strong as Bass wood, and they bleed.
6. Hone, hone,hone.
7. You can get away with alot of expenses by promising to make your wife something nice for the house.
8. Actually make something nice for the house.
9. Computer graphics programs are your friend.
10. Read these boards.
11. See 1 & 6
12. Mistakes will be made, mistakes in wood can be used for kindling.
13. When chipping, draw small, chip small.
14. Cats seem to like eating wood chips.
15. There will be many days like this one....Head Bange

Yup. And if the wife hollers at you for tracking sawdust and wood chips around, just blame the cat.Smile

One of the great aspects of my carving hobby is that my wife got me started. She bought me the starting tools and signed me up for a carving class as a Christmas gift several years ago. Our instructor made her promise to learn that wood chips are not dirty or messy; they are pure, virgin pices of clean wood that can be swept up or vacuumed easily. So, we don't have any discussions about wood chips on the carpet under my carving table. Sweet! Mike

My wife is the one who suggested I start carving again. Guess she thought it would keep me out of trouble.

She dosen't mind chips and dust so much as long as I clean up after myself. Heck she let me stain the dulcimer stands in the living room without complaint.
