Makes great bases. A pretty wood when stained and a lot cheaper than oak or walnut!

It makes great baseball bats. I turned a number of pieces...lidded boxes but have not tried carving on any. Considering the density of the kiln-dried stuff I get (baseball bat blanks) I would say that power carving with good burrs might work. I will give it a try and let you know.

I've turned a number of ash bowls and carved some relief features on some of them. It is a delight to turn and not hard to carve. Sharp tools is the critical issue.

Ash is a beautiful wood. If you have any, enjoy it. With the Emerald Ash Borer now established in North America, the ash trees around here are dying off by the thousands and the wood can't be transported as a containment effort.

I have done some relief carving with ash, it is softer than oak but has some of the same characteristics, long grained, with some soft areas of grain, all in all easier to work with than Oak and with the color of ash I think more versatile. Once I got used to the way it worked It was pretty easy and I was able to get some decent detail. I am not a real experienced carver but it was fun to work with once I got used to it
