I made mine using Spanish Cedar for the box itself and a layer of Butternut on the top to carve a design into. The Butternut was perhaps 1/2" thick and carved beautifully. The cedar gives the cigars no strong aroma, and holds the humidity inside well.

I have carved a few humidor-size boxes, and have made some. The nicest corner joints usually require some type of power tools. But remember, items of this sort were made entirely by hand in the past.

Here is a box I found and carved to hold my carving chisels. It was probably a vanity case (it had a mirror inside the lid) and was painted. When I stripped the paint off I discovered it was made of nice wood (butternut on the top) with finger joints on the corners. So, I carved this Wayne Barton pattern in the top and fitted it to hold my tools.

Built many items like this and a router isn't needed. Hand cut dovetails, Mitered corners, mortise and tenon ,splined corners half lap..several others.Plenty of books on simple joinery where routers aren't needed. Build the box out of any wood you like. The ones I've built were ( Oak, Maple, Cherry and Mahogany) and like most you buy line them with cedar.

I planed the Cedar to 1/2" thick and the side and end boards are 2" wide. The box is 12" x 7" and the botton and top are solid Cedar as well. I laminated the outside top, Butternut, to the inside top so the enclosure for the cigars is totally in Spanish Cedar.

I joined the corners with a simple lap joint, and only the outside of the box has a finish on it.

Hope this helps,

Bob

I've done several with a family's coat of arms, leaf designs ( appropriate) but could be anything you wish, geometrics, chip carvings, compass points,,well,, you name it. Let your imagination go ,, or look through some books on designs, motif's etc. for inspiration.
