Default Hangers

What are you using to have a hanger on the back of your cotton wood carvings? I do have some saw type hooks..but I'm afraid if I pound into the backs of these bark pieces they will split from the nails that come with the hangers.

I usually guoge a notch in the back so a nail will catch & hang the piece. I suppose you could drill a shallow hole & get the same effect.
Prbably more or better solutions but this works for me-

Same as BBowers, gouge out a hole or drill one. Now if you do that Kathy, make sure you know how deep you Bark carving is and how deep you want to go with the hole. Take it from me, you can ruin a nice carving.

Now, saw tooth hangers will work if you get the ones that have the blades(for lack of a better word) on the backs that you puch in and not the brad ones. Also, A dab of e6000 glue will keep them snug for years and years.
I buy those by the hundreds at Shepard of the Hills / Case Knife factory outlet in Lebanon Mo for the little brides crafts and sometimes I use them on the bark carvings also. I have started to using both the hole and the sawtooth hangers on the bark carvings. That way, if the hangers do come off( I haven't had any problems with the glued on ones), there is still a way of hanging the piece.

Thank you. I'll try both of these ideas.

I just make two knife cuts 1/4 inch apart and use a 1/4 chisel and dish out the area, about 1 1/2 wide and about 1/4 to 3/8 in deep like this

Marci:
If you want to use the sawtooth hangers, don't use the little brads - instead, go to your local Home Depot, Wal-Mart, etc., and get some 3/8 or 1/2 inch long #8 (or #6 if you can find them) sheet metal screws. These are a bit thinner than wood screws, but hold well in wood. Or use wood screws of the same size...
