Default Habitat - Wood Carved or Sculpted

Just curious as to what the general population thinks of Habitat being one of the following. (I do realize that this is a personal choice on what people want to portray in their carvings, however I am curious as to how people view this topic.

Preferences?? Lets say a bird on a pine branch and pine cone

1. Found wood or natural piece.
2. Sculpted (ie quickwood/copper/brass with epoxy/superglue etc)
3. Carved from wood

Thoughts?

Larry

Well, I'll jump right in here and vote for all three. I carve birds of prey in larger sizes.

The drawbacks I see for each are:

found wood - you are limited to the shape of the wood and, unless painting the whole thing, you have to use the whole thing.

sculpted - difficult to make it look natural. Like woodcarving, it takes lots of practice.

carved - takes a lot of time and, for me, a pretty good size chunk of wood.

The advantages I see for each are:

found wood - you get some very interesting pieces and don't usually have to do a lot of work on them.

sculpted - you get to shape it exactly to what you have in mind for your bird.

carved - you get to say you carved the whole thing.

Hi Larry,

I typically use found wood, sometimes altered a bit for the piece. I'm interested in attempting scuptled habitats, but not sure if I'm up to that task.
