Hello Al, I have carved a couple of them, Just like carving a very shallow relief. don't have any book on them although Bill Janey has a good one out, He is a power carver but you can hand carve his patterns. I have thought about getting it my self. There is one eagle I did in a rifle on my carving pages under reliefs I think. GaryMc ![]() P.S. When we gonna get together and go driftwood and stick hunting??

Hey Gary - Did you sand the stock before carving? I have a request to carve one. I believe it is stained maple. I'm just wondering how much to sand. I will have to restain the carved part and want it to match the rest of the stock. Thanks for any info. al.rudd |

Hello Al, I did sand the stock, and refinished it using tru-oil. I did it for an artist friend and took a dremel tool in trade for the carving. I did it about ten 12 years ago. GaryMc

Might I suggest that you do sand the rest of the stock before carving. Then you can refinish the stock and everything will match perfectly, rather than trying to match the old color. A gun stock isn't a huge job and you can do some beautiful carving on one. I trust we will be granted a view of the finished product? Smile Bob

Hey Al, I did a gun stock for the hubby, told me he'd buy me the RAM 45 Micro carver if I did it... told him, "OKAY honey baby, you've got a deal"!! I followed the instruction in the book, Gunstock Carving by Bill Janney, probably the book you're referring to. The only problem I had was finding the self-adhesive transfer paper he uses, solved the problem though using regular tracing paper sprayed with self adhesive spray they sell anywhere. Worked great! I drew up a buck's head then did the oak leaves and acorns around it. The gun stock's finish was badly worn so we just scrubbed it down with denatured alcohol (added to a bucket of warm water with a little dishwashing liquid) and very fine steel wool, then just stained it with walnut stain when I was all finished carving. For the finish I used what Bill Janney recommends, Tru Oil Gunstock Finish, got ours at Wal-Mart. Gave it a beautiful finish!! I tried taking a picture of it when it was finished but it came out blurry, if I can get a better one I'll post it for you to see. Hope this information helps some! Callynne

Al, thanks for the topic - and thank all for the input. Why? I just got a request to do a carving on a gun stock! The guy is actually going to provide a "seconds" stock for me to practice on. I believe I still have a Video tape I won a couple years ago in a carving contest. I can't remember, but I think it was by Mr. Janney. |

I just edited my above post, realized I hadn't been clear about the denatured alcohol, which wasn't used straight, but mixed with some warm water and detergent. Dishwashing liquid, Spic and Span or Simple Green would work, something that is just a detergent, not with added bleach or something like that and not too much, you don't want the water too soapy. Sorry for any confusion! Red Face Callynne
