Makes sense to me to paint it green :P I have seen one out of basswood that was painted with a light wash and wiped down to give it a antique look. Then the guy used the burnt sienna/linseed oil topcoat to bring out the details.

Thor, that is an amazing greenman! I have put mine aside for a while, something I don't do often but I did not feel comfortable doing the acanthus leaves. Not sure why, but thought I could use some practice. Then I started another, high relief carving, really got into it, and still haven't finished it.

:P Lorax, Paint it GREEN? Ok, well, maybe............
