Default The great pattern hunt

I'm looking for a pattern or even a decent sketch of a fella straining like mad to hoist a really heavy load in his arms. Maybe an old duffer straining at the trash can, or alittle kid trying to help mom with a basket-load of wet laundry. Any suggestions?

Thanks, Hi-Ho, but I've been trying to draw it out and it never looks workable.

Thanks for the link Mwilleson, found some interesting pictures, but still not quite what I was hoping for.

(sigh)

Back to the pencil and paper.

Hoe about an old Geezer with his big belly on the trash lid and him trying to pull the can up. Kind of lifting his weight also, eh?

How about this. Here's an article from the Carvers Companion that shows how to make a wire armature of a man, position it how you want, then add clay.

Even if you don't do the clay, it's easy to shape the man how you want him to get the pose your looking for.

Good article!

Mwilleson - Thanks, I should have thought about a wireframe mannequin a while ago. (slaps self with soggy spaghetti noodle)

Thomp - Ugh carting Mrs. Ugh around is hilarious, someday if I ever get enough confidence as a caricature carver, I'll give it a whirl.

Kenny_S - that is almost what I'm trying to come up with. I have in mind a feast bowl with a small figure straining to lift the bowl all by himself. The bowl being much larger than the little man, he has quite a difficult job.

I've attached a rough sketch of what I've come up with thus far. The little squiggle in the corner is a very rough overhead view.

ARE YOU KIDDDING OR WHAT?!?!?! GIMME A BREAK!Head Bange Your sketch is better than a lot I have seen.

You've got one side of your pattern, now just transfer the relative horizontal lines across to a front view, fill in what vertical lines you need, and/or just take your top view and enlarge it on a copier until it's relatively close to the size of your side view, and you're done. GO CARVE, YOUNG MAN! GO CARVE!
