Received my order of basswood in the mail today. Excited about turning it into glorified splinters. So excited had to tell somebody. Now what to carve? (besides my Fingers)

For the last 4-5 years, I've been trying a lot of other woods, to see how they carve and to take advantage of the grain and color in the finished carvings. I forget how nice it is to carve really good basswood. I need to get back to my roots every now and then. After wrestling with some cherry or hard walnut for a few hours, basswood seems to carve itself. Enjoy. Mike

Congratulations! I know just how you feel! When I started carving the only wood I had was the ends of 2x4's....I didn't realize how hard of wood that was till I got my first basswood.....it was love at first slice! Talking Deborah

Basswood is nice--especially if it's from up North. But every once in a while I migrate back to Poplar and I wrestle with which I like better. Poplar is just a little bit harder, but it doesn't have the fuzzies that Basswood has. But Poplar isn't creamy white like the Basswood--but occasionally I get a piece of Poplar with an interesting pattern of colors of ivory, tan, lime, etc. Life is tough with all the choices of wood to carve!Wink

dtoggs, what a coincidence. Today as I was finishing up at work, a fellow letter carrier comes up and says "Hey I told a guy on my route that you were going to start carving again and he gave me two catalpa logs that have been drying in his garage for three or four years. I put them in your truck." So it looks like I will get to try catalpa sooner than I thought. What luck!
