Default Glue question

Hello folks,

I've got a question about pins. I want to fasten one of those pins you can get at the craft stores to the back of a small carving so that it can be worn as a pin. What's the best adhesive to use? Also, should it be glued to the raw wood or finished?

thanks,
mikeg

Five minute epoxy should work well for this. With the epoxy, I don't think it matters if you've finished it or not.

I use the carpenters grade of cyanoacrylate for about everything....except maybe wood to wood where I use mostly elmers carpenters glue....I also use polyurethane similar to Grizzly glue.....for walking stick handles, problem with the poly glue it has to sit overnight........really like the cyanoacrylate......but if you are going to use it, be careful and be sure to have some acetone around LOL.

Well here is my two cents worth. I've made more pins than I could count. 10 or 15 even. . Five minute epoxy has a shelf life, and will give up on me over time. I've tried Gorilla glue, and am not satisfied with it. The Lepages yellow carpenters glue seems to be the most reliable. I put on one coat leave the pin over night, and apply another coat. With the carpenters glue, I've had no failure to my knowledge.

For my Santa pins, I use the dremel with a 2mm ball to make a small hollow on the back for the epoxy to get into - I hollow it so the opening is smaller than the rest of the hole - undercut the edges... To put the clasp on, I put some 5 minute epoxy into the hole, some more on the back side of the clasp and put it into place. I make sure some of the epoxy has oozed through the hole in the clasp as well. This makes a good mechanical bond, as well as the bond of the epoxy.

I've used the Elmer's cyanoacrylate glue to glue pinbacks to the back of a carving. Moisten the wood in the area where the pinback will sit, put enough glue to cover the pinback bar on top of the moistened area, and place the pin flush to the wood surface, and so that it is covered by the glue. After a bit, the glue should be foaming in reaction to the water. The glue will fill the holes on the pinback bar, and secure it to the wood. It will be set in about 4 hours. Let sit overnight for full strength.
