Question Geometric designs of golf balls

I am doing geometric figures on golf balls but have alot of trouble taking the covers off. I like to know if anyone sells golf balls with the covers off.
Thanks,

Did you check out Gene's tutorial on carving golf balls located on this site? His method of removing the cover may give you some tips.

Talking Re: Geometric designs of golf balls

I am not interested in the faces carved on the balls but need the whole ball not half to be without a cover. I also need the inner ball not to be destroyed or nicked in any way. I can do it but it's very hard and wondering if anyone has any better ideas. I use my Dremel with a cut off blade and boil them but seems that they are not truely round after boiling. Maybe, I leave them in the boiling water to long. Also know about the PVC cutter, but being a woman, don't have the right tools to make the needed adjustments to the cutter. Also aware of the site that sells balls without covers but again they have only 1/2 cover off and not sure if the ball isn't damaged and you can get only a few colors. I like the deep colors-purple, red, etc
Also, know how to divide the ball up but looking for an easier way.

Thanks,

dedes

I do alot of golf ball carving, the colors are a luck of the draw. I have seen the bright colors inside the Callaway brand, but their construction of the cover and inner cover make it very difficult to get to the center. If you use a cut off wheel on a dremel and a thin blade screwdriver to pop the covers off, most of the time you can get them off very clean if you take some caution when cutting into the cover.

I have just recently carved a few golf balls that I removed the cover off a couple years ago, they carved quite nicely.
I recently read and tried to remove the cover in this manner, cut the entire golf ball in half (using PVC pipeCutter) then pry off the desired cover and superGlue the inner halfs back togeather..
It worked well for me...

I dont know if this will help, But I also carve golf balls and the easiest way I have found to get the cover off is put the ball in a vise and saw in half with a jr.hacksaw. Then rotate the ball around till you have a complete circle. Then I take off one half of the cover with a screw driver. In your case you would be taking both sides off. Like I said I dont know if this will help you. But its another way to get the cover off.............Denise

I cut the cover off of 12 balls yesterday using Genes method. I put the ball in a vice in a soft wrag to protect it and snug it up so you can still rotate the ball. I use a cut off wheel and the Dremel and do about 3/4" at a time and rotate.
It is very hard to judge the depth of cut which is important to you. Out of the 12 I cut I don't think any off them were perfect like you require. I only carve one side so it does not matter.
I think the only way to achieve this would be by using a lathe where you can control the depth of cut.
