Last year my neighbor cut down some 30 ft pines. The tree was cut in various sections. I kept a few and sealed the ends (at least I thought). I stored 4 in the shed put 2x4s across them and they became a storage shelf. Another I sealed with water sealer kept outside on the patio and I use it as a novelty coffeetable or footstool, No problem. I guess I forgot to seal one of the ends that I'm using as a shelf end; as it developed a white fungus on the unsealed end. I cut a quarter off the piece and now don't see any soft spots. I sealed it (this time). The bark is still on all. Now that I only have one set of shelf ends, I want to cut sections for use in relief carving or scrollsaw art. How long before I can determine if the rotting has stopped on that particular piece? Carving found wood can be work.

Sometimes when I'm picking up a load of southern pine there is an orange mold on it. The lumber pressure treaters I take it to use a light acid on it before it goes in the pressure treater, basicly a strong vinegar.I don't know if it will work on wood not being treated. macktruck

I just used the bleach and water. I had placed the piece out in the sun, I thought maybe something like mildew and mold in the shed was causing it. I'm in Pittsburgh so we have all kinds of pine here. I also have a green mold (a few of my neighbors do too) growing on the trunks of our live cherry trees. I'm not sure if it is a blight of some sort or what it is.

Hi, I'm not real sure about this mold where you live, but we have mold on our cherry trees, and if I spray them with garden sulphur it usually cures it. The mould on the pine while it is curing, is usually a sign of not enough air circulation. The bleach and water solution works for me, plus get some more heat and air circulation around it. I tried drying pine boards in my basement, thought it was a great idea. Stuck it and piled it correctly. Well in the spring it was a mess of mould. It needs light, and air circulation, plus some heat if there is any. The best place for me to dry wood, is overhead in a building. Nothing gospel in my information, just my two cents worth. Hope it is some help. : : |
