A while back there were some questions about carving Mobius strips. Since I had nothing better to do on Labor Day, I played around with some and thought they might help others understand them. They are all made from 1" X 2 1/4" X 3" basswood. I didn't clean them up or coat them since I have no further use for them. Picture 1 shows a standard mobius and a heart-shaped one. Both meet the requirement of one face and one edge. If you start at any point and go all around them, you end up back at where you started. Pictures 2 and 3 show what you get when you carve a line through the middle of the wide face. Instead of two pieces, you end up with a long mobius that has two 1/2 turns. It still retains the one face / one edge requirement. Picture 4 shows what you get if you cut through the face aproximately 1/3 of the way in from the edge. This one turns out very neat because (as shown in picture 5) you end up with a long mobius with two 1/2 turns that is interlocked with a single 1/2 turn mobius. Hope you enjoy and get some ideas from these. Dan |

Those are very cool, Dan. Thanks for posting them. I have a Mobius strip on my list of things to carve. One of these days I'll get around to it . . .

I've played with mobius strips with paper but never thought about trying to carve one. Thanks for the idea and the pictures. Beth |

Dan, You call that fun - you are one sick puppy Really, that's neat - trying to follow the curves makes me dizzy. But then, I am on pain medication. |

Bill: The real fun is when you try to define the topology of the figure... I had a math class that did that sort of thing about 45 years ago - but can't remember diddly about it now. Dan: Nice experiement! Claude |
