You have all heard the tale of the frog prince? Well this is the tale of something else. Once upon a time a little wood carver entered into a competition which demanded a piece of art in twenty-four hours to the subject of a theme. Green was the theme announced late in the day, when the little wood carver entered the fray. He worked hard for five hours, till nearly midnight. When a big chunk of sculpture dissappeared from his sight. His green frog now was without a left leg, with so little time his gods he did beg. For insight, inspiration, ideas anew. Nary a thought came to what he might do. He dragged his sore body to another lump of wood, to begin sawing and chipping in the hope of something good. From a dimple came an inkling, from a rough shape came a form. At length came a concept with which he could ...grapple. The little wood carver ended up with an ...apple. Which he named, 'New York Granny'. Frogs 005.jpgFrogs 007.jpgFrogs 008.jpgFrogs 011.jpgFrogs 017.jpg Comments and critiques are always appreciated. I would love to have had another week with this one to get it to a very high sheen all round, but time simply ran out. Joe.

Nice apple, Joe! is it just the photo angle, or is the stem off-center in the final photo? The 4th one looks ok... Claude |

I really love the apple. What kind of wood is it? It really turned out nicely.

Hi Claude, the photo is a little misleading although I did place the stem a little off-centre. Thanks for the nice comment.

Phil, I used Yellow Birch for the apple which is simply my favourite timber to work with. Nice grain and reasonably soft. Glad you liked it.

Hello Robert. The apple didn't win, dipped out to a wire chicken from a sixteen year old. It did have plenty of admirers though. I somehow doubt that I will be getting it back.

Thanks Christina, glad you liked the name. It took a bit of prompting and clues before some of my friends got it.
