Basswood has jumped up high in price. Only thing about green spring cut basswood it isn't as white as a winter cut. I have several piece here that are 17 ft long and 15" to 17" wide. But as all have checking and cracking are sure to happen in sizes like this. S wedges are suppose to help in that area, but no idea. Also what is the wieght on "green" basswood? If it is anything like the chunk that hit my foot and took of my toenail lol it is about 3 to 4 pounds per bdft. I sell on ebay and it cost a arm and a leg for shipping a 6 x10X 59" Kiln dried basswood block. I believe it was around $40.00 . I also listed 600 bdft of 3.50 x 6 x 59 and no one wanted it. Right now I have about 300 bdft of winter cut basswood, Kiln and stored in a dry garage. 3 piece are about 3.50x 15"x 50" all pretty nice. I have about 100 + piece of assorted s4s and s2s basswood blocks if anyone is interested.

Thanks!

it runs around 2.5 pounds per bdft. But it all depends on the moisture contect.

It sounds like you have some nice stock. Have you ever tried to sell to your local Woodcraft or Rockler? The owner of the store I worked at in Milwaukee did by a lot of wood from private local sellers so this might be the case with other stores as well. We mill a lot of Oak, Walnut, Cherry, Ash and Maple here but we haven't really milled any Basswood. There are very few carvers in my area and I work with mainly harwoods. That's a good tip about winter Basswood being more white. The trees we run across are mostly removed during spring, summer and fall when home owners are in the landscaping mood or builders are doing lot clearings. I'm going to seal the ends of the fresh logs right away when they come in and keep them long. This should help eliminate some of the checking and cracking problem. Try listing your Basswood here http://www.woodnet.net/forums/
Or if you like I can list it for you and send the interested people a link to you.

Dale

thanks for the site. I have been scoping out some cedar logs that have been left after the county came through and cut them down under the power lines LOL I am hoping I can get 1 or 2 bolts.

Another consideration. Check with your states rules on shipping wood with bark attached into your state. Oregon doesn't allow it because of wood boring bugs and other vermin that sneak in under the bark. Might check to be sure. You don't want to pay the shipping only to have it seized at the border! Maybe your state don't have those type of rules.
