Default 'Fraid I had to try the cane thing too....

Ha ha, I tried it, and it didn't turn out horrible! My first green man cane topper (now I just need the cane.....), and I completely disregarded the “rules” and used ferns instead of leaves. Lots of fun. Thanks to all you ”cane people” who inspired me!

Very cool!!!
I bought some cane shafts on ebay a while back for cheap--$2 or $3 each--turned out of oak. They're professional quality. Maybe look there. I black lacquered them and put crystal decantur tops on them and they really came out great! Breakable but great!
I still have a few unused that I'm going to "greenman" I think, after watching this thread!

Rules????? Rules?????? There's rules in this carving game? Sheeeese, looks like I'm headed for carvers' jail!

Nice job with the "Fern Man"! By the way, what country is he from? Hope he had his proper border crossing papers, or he might be in the slammer with me.

Well done.....love the effect. Ain't no rule in carving, just freedom of expression! Express away, be free, carve to your hearts content!

Carvity, Wonderful! You have the leaf positions exactly right! There is no question that the cheeks, eyebrow ridges, and chin of the face are all formed from the wide area of the leaf. And making them fern fronds !!!!!!!! Way to go!

OK, so when are you going to do another one?

Susam

Way to go Carvity! I seem to be sort of stuck with the oak leaf thing and I appreciate the new effects that can be achieved through different shapes. I really like the star-like sharpness of the fern leaves... sort of an inspiring accent for sure!

When I go on my afternoon bicycle ride I believe that I'm gonna keep an eye out for different leaf (or other) shapes that could possibly work with the greenman thing.

My brain is on a delightful kind of "overload" from all the inspiring ideas that I'm getting 'round these parts lately. Thanks for sharing!

Yeah, neat! And the rebel in me likes the idea of breaking the "rules." Where would we be if everybody follwed the rules of convention.
