Default I forgot to show this

This is my first attempt at using a harder wood (cherry). I used my mallet tools on it and did fine until I turned it over to do the back. Then it was too unstable to stay in my holder. (I think I have that problem solved and will show you later.) So I switched to power when the palm tools or knive weren't doing the job.

I like my overall concept, but the execution isn't "gee whiz". I will chalk it up as a learning experience. The poor dragon has no eyes because I wanted to burn them, but I haven't gotten a burner yet

He is finished with Danish Oil Natural and Feed and Wax. Some of you may remember that I wasn't happy with Feed and Wax......then I noticed that the wax wasn't mixing with I shook the bottle. So I nuked it gently and got it remixed and now it is working fine.

Thanks for looking. All comments are welcome....I appreciate your input.
Joy

It's a wonderful design, Joy. I suspect that many Welsh spoon carvers do not put that much effort into the backside.

I'm currently working on a new design with a dragon at the top and a lot of Celtic braid leading down to the hearts. I plan to use basswood this time.

I can see a dragon with his mighty wing and his feet coming down to the two hearts And his tail wrapping around the two hearts.

Cherry is hard at times to carve Joy and you didnt let it stop you from creating a beautifull spoon! Plus your finish is outstanding also!
Thanks so much for sharing your dragon love spoon.I like it!!

............... Thanks Joy;...........like the old saying goes " Good things are worth waiting for"...........your spoon is no exception. That's a great job you've done there.
I haven't worked up the courage to try a spoon yet, and certainly not one as elaborate as yours, but maybe some day.................

Hi Joy, I looked at your thread earlier and didn't see any images--so I thought I'll check back later.
Wa-la, and here they are--your spoon is really nice very rich in color and super carving.

Hi Joy, Didn't look like the hard wood bothered you at all. Very nice finish and details. Well done. Merle

Joy, being a dragon fan, I love your spoon. These Welsh spoons look like real carving challenges, particularly in cherry. You're amazing, as are your carvings.

Nice work, Joy!

One thing you could do for eyes: put a small dot of black paint where you want the eyes, then mix up some two-part 5 minute epoxy and using a toothpick, apply a little bit of epoxy to the dry black paint. This will make a little "dome" on the eye and look very realistic.
