Default Foredome - Mounting Sanding Sleeve onto Rubber Drum

I infrequently use my Foredom and I want to put a new sanding drum onto the rubber mount. Does anyone know of an easy way of mounting a 2" long by 1.5" diameter sanding sleeve onto the round, rubber drum without tearing the skin off your hands?

Does it have a screw on the end?? If it does, you need to unscrew it aways.....

My 2" rubber drum has a half inch nut on it that you turn to expand the rubber to hold the sleeve.

The nut on the larger drums are left handed threads, right=loosen, left=tighten.

Wayne,

I have also found that a combination of pushing/pulling the sleeves to and fro is helpful for loosening them. The fine dust gets trapped in there and causes them to act like they are stuck. Also I have had a few drums that were just too tight (read large) out of the box even with the screw or nut whichever is used completely removed. For this problem I have chucked the drum and very lightly touched it to a piece of fine sandpaper while spinning at a bout 20,000 RPM. I usually find a high spot on the drum that is causing the problem. Take it slow since if you remove too much you might as well throw it away.

if u wait a little the drum will get thinner i have to tear the old ones off and wet the drum to put the new ones on sometimes if i want to keep the old ones i fish a small wire down though and go around it to break the bond and it will come right off i cut a small groove a 1/16 deep into the rubber drum so it;s easy to get the wire in it;s small so it doesn;t hurt the way it sands

Sanding drums last quite a while and I have found that I use the half near the tip a lot more than the end near the chuck. So, if I have not used the drum in a while, I reverse the drum, not easy, not pleasant, rough on the fingers, but easier than trying to replace a drum that has been on there a year or so.

If you sprinkle a little talcum powder (I use baby powder) on the rubber before putting on the sleeve it slides right on and makes it easier to remove when you want to replace it.
