In case you don't get the solution, have you considered contacting the Foredom company directly?

usally it is cause by the handle and the shaft not being properly connected .make sure the pin on the shaft and the slot inside the handle are fitted together.

You might check how far the shaft is extending out of the outer sheath, let the flex shaft hang strait down and measure the distance, check your book it should be 3/4 or 1". When I changed the shaft on mine I had to adjust the sheath about 3/8" because it was getting hot and making quite a bit of noise Foredom has a video on there web site about adjustment.

Agree, check to see that you have your handpiece correctly placed in the shaft.

I had mine get hot on me once and I check and that was the cause. Never happened again.

Also Donna's suggestion of contacting Foredom is good if it's not a handpiece to shaft connection problem.

The directions on my hand piece says that when you connect it to the shaft, hit the 'on' button just a tad and if all is aligned correctly, you'll hear it click in.

But then if it still gets hot, wear a glove. I do, on both hands. The glove on the left hand....(that's the hand holding my carving piece) is LEATHER. If you've ever had the rough carving tool jump off the wood on to your hand, you'll never go glove less again..... bleed, ouch, oh nutz!!!!
