Default Flexcut gold too hard for Slipstrop

I bought a Slipstrop today. When I try to apply the compound to the wooden profiles it just rubs the paint off of the profile coating the compound. The only way that I have been able to apply the compound is to soften it with a flame. Am I doing something wrong?

Lon, I have not used flexcut gold but do have several other sticks of compound. The simplest way I have found to get it on my strops is to shave it off with my pocket knife. I then use my pocket knife to spread it around on the strops......helps keep my pocket knife sharp as well.

I've also read that if you put a little of the rouge compound on first it will take the gold better. It seemed to work on my power strop.

I bought a large brick of the green compound and found it to be as hard as rock....I ended up breaking off (with a hammer) small chunks, then crushing them down to a powder, putting that into a stainless steel bowl and adding Crisco lard a little at a time until I had a paste that was easily spreadable. Works awesome and the extra I store in a small jar with a lid.

One time I took a black compound I had purchased at Sears and used one of my wife's graters to grind it, then put it in a salt shaker. It worked but I think Pauls way is easier.

Try spraying some WD-40 on to the stick of gold compound. That should sopften up the surface enough to let you apply it to your strop.

If ya can't fix it wit WD-40 or Duct tape, it don't deserve to be fixed!

I use my painting hair dryer to soften the compound, and it goes on easily.

I would just keep at it till it sticks. It should have enough wax in the stick to help it stick. I had a hard time getting any compound to stick to a new felt wheel, someone suggested first rubbing the wheel with mineral oil then apply the compound, It worked great !!

Great ideas. I think I will carve some off with my knife, crush some it, and add some mineral oil so I can spread it easily.

Thanks,

Lon

Set it in the sun to warm it up a little, it then goes on nicely
