Default Fixed Carving

This is the carving I drill a little to deep in back, Came out just above the bill a little leaving a small hole just below the number 17. I had another pices I was working on and sanded it down and used glue and dust to create the new bark. But first I poured a bunch of super glue over the area(Hi Ho's Tip) to strengthen the area and let that dry then used the glue/dust misture and then sanded that down. I am pleased with the the results. Now it is the property of my son.

Thanks all for the kind words.

Colin, I really wanted this one to work out as My son never asks for me to carve him anything even tho he loves looking at them. I started that one out as a civil war soldier but the cap did not look right to me so I changed it to a oldtime fireman. The helmet was a little small and I was going to try to emlarge it but the little bride showed me a picture of her Grandfather who was a firemen and his hemet was small compared to the later ones. To fisih this up. My son came over and said with wide eyes,'Is that for me"? Of course I said yes, so, I went to the garage to drill the hole in the back when I messed up. Anyway, A little glue and brak dust works wonders and using super glue to strengthen up the area helped. Ran out of semi-gloss so used a Craft Lacquer my little bride had as a finish and the first two coats soaked in really well and the third one gave it a good sheen. The color is the bark.

Another bark fix tip:

I'll take chips of my bark from the floor, like a dozen or so, put them in my coffee grinder, and grind them up just like coffee beans, end up with the fine bark powder, mix it with the glue to form a paste.

I've also removed a piece of bark from the back side of my carving and reglued it over the front section that was damaged, when dry, began re-carving my piece. This helps maintain the same color of bark is using a section from the backside.

Kenny, nice job and I'm glad to worked through the problem and didn't give up on it, believe me when I say, it adds another special meaning to this piece.

Thanks coffeman, I appreciate the tip and have used that technique(dust and glue) on my woodworking projects but never hurts to be told that. I thought about glueing a piece of bark to the front but thought this way was quicker.
Thanks again for the tip and kind words.
