Anyone doing crankbait lures? Wondering about the type of paint you use as I've carved the bodies and primed them. Thanks!

Hey deb-bee try searching for a site called Surf Talk. Lots of good advise on wood crankbaits there. Hours of reading for the beginner.

I shudder to remember! When we were kids, Dad bought a particularly gaudy paint-by-number kit. He got out the tackle boxes, tossed the picture and told us to go to it and paint up all the nicks and dings. They dried fairly fast, guessing now they might have been acrylics. Observation: Northern Pike are not fussy at all, must be shape and motion. If you plan to use acrylics, Liquitex BASICS are really runny. Just don't. Stevenson, daVinci and Grumbacher have excellent covering properties. But, 2 coats of Liquitex Gloss varnish is transparent and as bright as sunlight on water. |

I think any quality paint will work, oil or acrylic, but A good seal coat of varnish is a must. I looked on the internet and saw this for a hard shell (finishPlastic-Pruf Epoxy Fishing Lure Coating) Please let us see your finished product.

Like Gergie said, just about any type of paint will do but the key is the final top coat. I've been making all types of lures for years & for the past 4-5yrs I've been using a 2-part marine clear coat epoxy that I get from Woodcrafters. Two coats of that & feel free to bang them off rocks with little concern. Now a muskie may make a tooth mark or three but then they would dent a ball bearing.

Thanks for your input everyone. I've found that the 2 part epoxy coat seems to be the answer after spending hour learning online.
