Default First trip too woodworking store

I just made my first trip too Klingspor's woodworking store in Hickory, NC. Im lucky its only 30 min. drive from where I live. The staff was really friendly and helped alot. I told him I was a beginner and I wanted to start with the basics in hopes that I wont get discouraged and quit. I purchased the book. Carving a woodspirit in a hicking stick by Skylar Johnson. a pair of Kevlar gloves, and a slipstrop from flexcut. and Two 1 x 1 x 10 basswood to start off with. I didnt buy any knives this trip since I have a basic set of palm tools and a Walnut hollow knife. Next trip I am going to get the flexcut knives he showed me. So needless to say im very excited and ready to start. Any advice would be appreciated. I cant wait to go to the woodworking store again. Have a nice evening.

Golly, but I'd be in so much trouble all the time if I lived 30 minutes from a carving supply store!

Sounds like you got the basics. I did notice some used Flexcut tools on Ebay yesterday. You might compare the prices.

Be sure to put the glove on the hand that's holding your carving. If you have a thumbguard on your knife hand, you don't usually need a glove, but it's great insurance.

Good luck. Let us know if we can help you.

Forrest... Great selection on the book! That was one of my first picks also. You live in a great area to be woodcarving. For your woodspirits, save yourself some money and just venture out in the woods and pick yourself up some walking sticks. Sweetgum and Poplar are great for carving and a 1-1/2" stick doesn't take all that long to dry out. Cut them extra long so even if they split a little at the ends you can cut of the split and still have a great stick!

Sounds like your ready to go Thumbs Up, I have never ordered from klingspors but I hear they have some excellent sandpaper.
