Default First Sweet Potato

Hello Everybody!

I am going to carve my first sweet potato. Since it is my first "tater" I would like to ask some of you more experienced carvers a few questions about it.

A) What happens to the potato after you carve it? Does it rot into a pile of goo?

B) Does it dry out and become hard like a piece of wood?

C) Can you paint, stain or seal it with varnish?

I would appreciate any help you can give me.

Thanks - Dave

PS- Merry CHRISTmas to all!

When you are finished carving, thread sewing thread or fishing line through the carving and hang it in a dry place for a couple of weeks. It will shrivel and dry very hard. I've painted mine with acrylics and coated with a clear coat.

I hung mine on the chandelier in my dining room and they dried nicely. Just be sure that they hang free - I believe that if they lean against something, that spot will likely rot instead of dry properly.
