Default First Nations Art Show

I had the pleasure of attending a showing of local First Nations art this week. The Miramichi is hosting the First Nations Hockey Tourniment and the art show was arranged quickly to compliment it. First Nations artists from all over the province had an opportunity to display their work. Wow folks......you should see the work. Carvings in wood, many in stone, bone and antler and paintings in oil on canvas, on moose antler and even silk were displayed. Traditional masks, and not so traditional sculpture were also displayed. I enjoyed the display and chat with the artists so much on Tuesday, that I returned yesterday evening, with my daughter, so she could enjoy the display as well. We ended up staying late into the evening chatting with the carvers and enjoying their company.

There are so many talented artists out there, one could make a life's work of just touring, enjoying and documenting them. Sorry, but I didn't think to take the camera, I'm not sure if they would have permitted it anyway. Perhaps I'll go back today and ask. The show finishes today.

Colin, I didn't get back over, sorry. But it was/is on CBC National Newsworld tonight, nice coverage. Some fantastic artists there. All are New Brunswick based, though may have originated elsewhere. They mentioned last night, that they may make it an annual event, so it must have been a success for them. I certainly enjoyed it.
