Default First Cut....

in my finger... not wood... LOL

Was not sure where to post this so General was where it is going....

Got my first cut on my left index finger... thank god not deep but my knife is sharp....

I was stropping my knife and testing it on a scrap piece and DUMB me did not put on my glove... so as I took the swipe, the tip of the knife took a nice sliver into the finger....

Thought I would share!!

Sean

Been there, Done that, and it hurts every time. Ya can always tell a carver who doesn't wear a glove by the scars on his hands. Don't ask me How I know!

Hope you heal quickly.

Well, congratulations.....you just joined the faternity of wood carvers. You also lost a bit of fear, cause it didn't hurt, did it, well not much! Some fear or respect is good, but the initial fear is overwith now.

Try not to let it happen again, blood doesn't make a good lubricant for sharpening.

AHHHH..

first blood...

the difference of a beginning carver and an old pro is the amount of scars on their hands and the storys they can tell about them...... hahah

not really!

Wear them gloves!!!!!!!!!
its tough to remember them even for me. i been carving one way or another since i was big enough to sneak a knife out of the house under the watchfull eyes of my protective mother.

Never thought of a glove, never used one for anything unless it was too cold to handle things..

until last year.. i dont cut myself i get pokes and pricks when im really carving.

but still sometimes setting and looking over a project i can see a bump or knot and go to remove it and knick myself..

One thing to think about constantly is,

"If this tool slips where will it go" and adjust your grip accordingly...
it keeps the red colors off your carvings.

I always seem to cut myself when I'm putting the gouges back in the tool roll, but not when carving. My teacher told us a real horror story on day 1 and I have been unable to forget it, especially working alone in a shed after hours....thanks for sharing!
