Default First attempt at a woodspirit

Wasn't sure to post a woodspirit carving.

Still looking for what i am good at, not sure I have found it yet. Today I tried to carve a wood spirit (pictured below) in a 3" x 6" piece of basswood. I think my eyes are starting to get better. I still need my tool much sharper though. I am practicing on that as much as i am carving. My carvings are still pretty fuzzy. I tried to make this wood spirit looking to his right so i though a larger left cheek would make sense. Not too sure of that decision when it was all said and done.

Feedback always welcome and appreciated as I learn.

Steve

Steve that is a great little carving really well done. Love the expression you definatly have a style that you can call your own. Only as a critique you asked for certainly nothing wrong with the carving at all. I would maybe try to get different depths on the hair and beard cuts and make them more of swirling S if you get what I mean. If I look closley I can see that maybe your gouge or knife is not sharp enough if I look at the cuts that is probably what makes the fuzzies. Mind you sometimes it is the wood. I do like the carving though really well done The eyes give this carving sole.

Hi Steve,
As Colin said, great job and the eyes do bring him to life. The more you do the deeper you will make your cuts, we're always afraid to take "too much" off. Nice job!
Dan
