Default First attempt at painting...

I've never painted a carving before. This is my first. Have to say it was kinda fun although a bit hard on the nerves. Lot to learn. Thanks to the folks who do the online videos. Helps A LOT!

His moustache doesn't stand out too well.

I think you did a super job for the first one! I like being able to see the wood through the paint. A viewer knows that this one isn't made from a plastic mold!
Thanks for showing him.

Very nice job, it's a perfectly applied wash. to make beards and mustaches stand out more, try this next time. Apply a light wash of raw sienna as a first coat. You will think... yuk. But let it dry.. then dry brush white over it and beards and mustaches will have more depth. Nice job!

Thanks guys!

That sounds interesting Corey! I have another one waiting for some paint and I'll try that. Been getting some good tips by PM from Claude on the eyes too! Y'all can feel free to critique it all you want. Only way I'll learn!

Nomad,
Nice job. The painting is almost as fun as the carving. You did good.

Safe Carving and God Bless,

Mark

Nomad, this is the look you will get. Just use a light wash and let it dry completely... half and hour or more or use a hair dryer. You just want it dry when you drybrush the white. The pic is of one of P.J. Driscoll's santas.

Looks really good, beards look good when they are painted with an off white such as antique white. I'd say for your first painted carving you did really well.

Wow, that really adds some depth! If my carvings looked half that good I'd be thrilled.
