After looking at untold posts of your wood spirits over time I decided to give it a try... I now have even more appreciation for you people! In between projects I took an old piece of Hickory and gave it a try... This is my first wood spirit and one of my first faces to ever tackle. Though he really is nothing like what I had in my head before I started, I did learn a great deal from him and have a bunch of "Next time I'll...." ideas! Any ideas? Other than I should probably try to figure it out with basswood before jumping on hickory! LOL Steve |

Hi Steve, looks like I get to be the first to CONGRATULATE you. I think you did a really good job on this woodspirit. As I've never carved Hickory I can't really comment on it's carvability. The big 3 carving woods for me are Cottonwood Bark and limb, Basswood and Aspen. I say you need to keep carving woodspirits because you show a talent for it even with your first piece. The Hickory color is really cool and looks like Mother Nature new this peice would be a woodspirit and even put the hair color in the right spot for eyebrows. Good Job Steve. Kathy

Thanks Kathy, I had a lot of fun with him. I do have some basswood here and will give another go with it.

Nice work - the use of the bark for the contrasting mustache/beard is great! Claude |

Hi Steve, I really like your carving. You did a fine job on the eyes and the eyebrows are great too. I like the way you have the dark and light showing. Wanda
