Here are a couple of my first wood sprits. Let me know what you think. I have been out of wood carving for a number of years. Just got back into it last month.

They're good for just using a 2 X 4. I've never had much luck carving that soft pine. I'd like to see what you could do with better wood. Have you ever tried cottonwood roots? I saw an indian carver do some amazing things with them. They really held detail. Dan |

For your first woodspirits they are great. Next time try to give the hair and beard a more curved effect. I aways call it a lazy S curve you will find that it gives your carving more flow. I can tell you my first woodspirits were not that good. Colin

Always happy to see more woodspirits posted, and your's turned out very well for your first time carving them. What I like about woodspirits is that there is no right or wrong way to carve them as each has its own character. Patrick |

Great job! TN's comments about the nose are right on. Most folks, me included, tend to flat face our woodspirits when we first start. Giving the face planes and depts really adds to the carving. You might want to think about purchasing Skylar Johnson's book, How to carve a Woodspirit I A Hiking Stick". It's not that expensive and gives step by step instructions with alternatives. Or, you can order Mark's Woodspirit CD.
