I just finishing the detail work on a toothpick holder. I'm not sure what to do for the finish. I want to leave it natural and would like to try and show the grain of the wood. I was thinking of using a coat of Minwax Finishing Wax and BLO. If I would do this would I use the BLO first or the Finishing Wax first? Any help or suggestions of other finishes would be appreciated. Thanks |

Hi, I don't know what BLO is but I use a sanding sealer to hold the grain and then sand it and put Minwax over it. It works especially well for bowls that are easy to buff. Hope this helps, Mike |

My favorite finish to seal and bring out the grain is Formby's Tung Oil, Satin Finish. I used it on everything I'm not painting. I just apply how ever many coats it takes until it quits seeping into the wood and has the sheen I want. Deborah

BLO is Boiled Lenseed Oil. I have used Johnson and Johnson Paste floor wax. Rub it on with my hands and then use a bruch to get it down in to the detail, let dry, buff out with soft rag like T-shirt. Do these steps for each coat. Might try mineral oil since it is to be used as a tooth pick holder.

Hobby Lobby has a product called " "Snow Tex" I have used several times. It isn't a spray on but really looks like snow once applied and dry. Other craft stores have the product also. Might be called by other names also.

Check with www.vandykestaxidermy.com they carry an artificial snow product for their taxidermy habitat displays that may be just what you are looking for. A 1 pound carton is around 6 bucks on page 209 of their 2006 catalog. They also have applicators for the stuff and looks like maybe kits. Just go to their website and type "artificial snow" in the search box, it'll bring you right to the page with a fairly good picture so you can see what the stuff looks like when applied.
