Default finishes

I am new to woodcarving but have been making wood hull model ships for a while. In some of the books I am reading about carving and finishing there is a diversity of finishes. sometimes requiring a re-finish in the future. In painting ships hulls I have a variety of finishes also. I have to record on the bottom of the ships stands of the finishes and manufacture of paint. I may need to re-finish parts of the hull in the future and need to track what I used. Is this a problem with carvings? do you track what finish you used?

Default Re: finishes

John, I doubt that many woodcarvings get refinished, so I don't feel that it is much of a problem. Our biggest problem is getting them finished in the first place. I know that when I find an old caricature carving, I leave it just the way I found it, as the age adds to the charm of the work that someone else did.
