What is wrong with the back foot? If ya had not said anything I wouldn't have asked. Nice job thanks for sharing him.

the dog is chestnut and the base is London plane ( the woods may be called something different in the U.S.A)

G'day,
Thanks for sharing this, I think the pose is good and shows the dog "on point" quite well, not sure if you meant the carving to be "true life" or "stylised" but you asked for a critique and my suggestion would be that he needs rounding off of his front legs and parts of the body. I can't tell from the pics whether the tail is part of the carving or an "add on" in either case I think you could improve the shaping a little. I love the head and the look of concentration . As folks have said often on here, you should number, date, and keep these early carvings, you will be pleasantly amazed as you look back at them and see how much you have improved over time. My only other suggestion has nothing to do with carving, but please consider background when you take your snaps, a dark backing simply doesn't do justice to your work.....Make lots of chips and enjoy your craft and the people that share your addiction.
John

I have to say I love this carving and the wood is exquisite. I do agree with Bill, however, that the tail could be a little better shaped, and you mentioned the foot yourself; however, all in all, it's a real nice carving! Bonnie

Never point out your mistakes. The chances are better that even that no one will even see them especially in a photgraph. I think that you did a great piece of work. I love the grain on the wood and the shape of the dogs head. Looks just like my daughter's dog which we just happend to be dsog sitting this evening.

Very nice job. Unlike Blinky Bill, I like the impressionistic look of the carving. But then I'm a flat plane carver, so take that for what it's worth. The head and body are great. I do agree with Blinky that the tail could be better shaped.

Hunters are EXTREMELY fond of their dogs. I think you could do well for yourself by doing portraits.
