I feel really stupid

I noticed there was some new postings in this thread, I was surprised to see they were directed at me!

Thanks Thor and Linda, for the great compliments! She is one of my favorite carvings and one I won't ever duplicate....no more Blue Willow Painting for me!

I think I did post some pictures of her over in the Carver's Gallery, Thor, not sure though, I'll have to check.

It has hand 'holes' in the sides for carrying, infact, the cord for the light goes through the one sides hand hole. I just unplug the light and carry the whole works out to the livingroom. I have an extension cord run to beside my recliner and plug it in, perfect lighting to carve by.

I've changed it a bit since those pictures where taken. I've run the black elastic the whole way across the back to hold different things I use a lot. If you have any questions, just ask, I'll be happy to answer!

This looks like it might work perfectly for what I need. It seems we both carve in similar environments! I've just been using a board with rubber carpet grip on it, only about 14" X 14" and spread a sheet on the floor where I'm working. Seems like I still get a lot of chips in/on the chair and in very strange places! Then when I stand up, I carry them all over the house, stuck to my clothes

Adding this to my "honey do" or maybe my own "to do" list. Looks great!

Hmmm.... wonder if my carving will improve to be as fantastic as yours? Nah---not a chance!

Does it fold up? Very cool! I'm going to make one! What depth front to back would you recommend? Are the sides about 10"? I think I'll make mine to fold to carry and store.
Great idea! Far better than the carving apron I use now.

No Wade, my portable carving desk doesn't fold up, it's too loaded up with stuff all the time!

The depth is 12 3/4", originally I had it deeper but it didn't fit on the chair (with me in it!) too well, hung out over the arms too far in front. We cut a couple inches off and it's perfect (for me) at this depth.

The backsplash is 7 1/2" high, it's attached on top of the bottom or base of the table, so the over all height is 8". Don't want to get it too high, it will block the television!

The skirt is 13" long, it covers the entire bottom of the base though, figured that would be easier on the arms of the chair than wood, sliding on and off of it!

I made the skirt out of upholstery material, I knew that wood chips would just slide off vinyl, which is what I covered the bottom of the desk with. I flip the skirt up over the desk when carrying it, when I set down, I just flip it back over me, tuck it under my arms and carve away, most of the chips end up on the desk or on the skirt. When I have to get up I just flip the skirt, and chips, back up on the desk.

Clean up is just brushing off the larger chips and occasionally sweeping off the smaller ones.

Added bonus, Linda, lifting it up and down off the chair helps keep (and/or build!) upper body strength!!

OK, the bench is great, too. Neat idea for sitting and carving. Karen still is not happy with me carving in "the house", though. Afraid I'll be forever confined to the basement.

That's the problem with computers. They are so flexible and powerful that it is easy to get lost in trying to use that power.

An alternate to directly uploading a picture here is to use a photo hosting service such as PHOTOBUCKET

Free, and the hosting automatically resizes images when you upload if they are kind of large. Then to display a picture, click on the IMG tag, copy & paste and away you go.

One of my old college professors gave us some advice about asking what we thought might be stupid questions. He said that if you had a question that might make you feel stupid to ask, there probably were others in the class that would like to know the answer. You should go ahead and ask the question for the benefit of all.
