Default Fan

I'm a big fan of fan carving!!!I though i would try my hand at carving a few fan.I carved about 10 fan and about 15 birds.This is the last of them they made great gifts.I carved them all out of basswood.

Hey, that looks really nice for sure. I too like to do some fan carving, especially the birds. Yes, they do make some really nice gifts. At least I forced them on the people. )

Thanks all
They where a lot of fun to carve.I though i needed white cedar to make fans with but the the basswood seemed to do ok.I found out that if you soaked the wood in water for a while it made splitting it a lot better.

I saw on the Woodwright show they had a fellow on there and he was soaking in hot water, especially before turning the blades. The blades also split nicer if you use kind of a slicing cut instead of a straight down cut.

I found out the hard way that slicing is better than straight down.I aslo bought one of thuse little 3" draw knife that is made just for cutting the fan.After using it i found out that my pocket knife works a lot better.
