Nora Hall was a great carver! And so was her father.
Here is a link about her.

I doubt you'd ever see a Gibbons or a Reimenschneider on Antiques Roadshow (not that it wouldn't be cool if you did!). I can rattle off at least a dozen Pacific Northwest native carvers who could realistly show up on ARS and are ARS-worthy. Mungo Martin, Charles Edenshaw, the Davidson bros., Willie Seawid.................

Hi Dereks and all other carvers,

I'm late to this party; however, here is my list:

1. Allen Houser - 20th century Native American sculptor who did some beautiful wood carvings as well as many bronzes.

2. The Ward Brothers- 20 Century decoy carvers who lived in Maryland on the Chesapeake Bay. There is a museum in Salisbury Maryland and a great competition in their mane.

3. Wilhelm Schimmel - 19th century woodcarver who lived in my neck of the woods. He whittled small pieces that he traded for whiskey and food. He developed an unique style and his pieces are valuable. I think WCI did an article on him a couple of years ago with a pattern.

To really see what famous carvers in this thread did, I suggest that you Google their names and study their inspiring work. Also take a little time to study works of sculptors who worked in stone, clay and bronze.

It is interesting to note what happens when woodcarvings DO appear on Antique Roadshow. They are usually dismissed as "interesting folk art" by some "unknown artist." "At a well-attended auction, this might sell for $1000!" Unfortunately there are few records kept of the output of many very talented woodcarvers or what actual carvings have sold for.

How about anyone in the Trygg family?

There's a handful of names among the Pacific Northwest Native Carvers, generations of families. Davidson, Reid, Hunt, Edenshaw. My apologies to all those I didn't mention.
What's outstanding about these families is that they carve solid silver & gold, stone as well as wood. And, they do it all with equal skill. If "fame" is connected to money, I have seen pictures of a $1.8 million argillite piece that sits on a private residence pool deck. Done by one of the above.
Take a look at the front of a Canadian $20.00 bank note. One was cast in bronze and sits in front of the Canadian Embassy in Washington DC. It's about 25' long x 8' tall. Thesre's a replica which looks like jade in the concourse of the Vancouver, BC airport (YVR)

Well, I can add a few names to the list.

From Puerto Rico (and extremelly hard to find among worldwide collectors):

1- Felipe de la Espada (1754-1818)
2- Tiburcio de la Espada (1798-1852)

From Spain:
1-Gregorio Fernandez
2-Francisco Salzilllo
3-Alonso Cano
4-Pedro de Mena

I see them as the spanish 4 Horsemen of Woodcarving and sculpture.
