I had an old log that was spalding so rather than put it on the wood pile, I decided to try something challenging. If you have viewed my carvings in the past, you will probably notice that I do not have any with profiles....and to make this little experiment even more challenging, I decided to try a profile of a female form. You will have to let your imagination fill in the leg which is crossing on top as I ran out of wood on that side to allow me to carve it into the wood. The spalding will play tricks on your eyes as the dark grain seems to change the lines of the carving. I added a little oil to bring out the grain. Good practice piece. Not easy working with rotting wood. Patrick |

Patrick, Great job! Maybe you will start a new trend. There are too many wood spirits and your subject is a lot easier on the eyes. LOL Bill K.

Good job , way out of my league for now, maybe in a half dozen yrs. Is that kind of wood hard to carve. Wayne (mj) |

Thank you everyone. I'm taking a sculpting course right now so I think that is how I got inspired to try this profile. Wayne (mj) - When the birch is green and not dried out like this piece, it would require a mallet...at least to get rid of the waste wood. This particular log was not hard at all...matter of fact it was too soft in areas. Patrick |

Patrick, she turned out well. Actually the spalting makes her look like she has garter type stockings on and um, well, pasties! She reminds me of pictures of pin-up girls from the 30's and 40's.

Patrick, Always enjoy seeing your carvings. This is a rather unique carving. I really like the look of the carving in the log. Safe Carving and God Bless, Mark |
