And never get it back? As I'm de-barking this log with a section of a samari sword, I was thinking about the nice draw knife I once owned. The guy I loaned the knife to also gave me the wood vice that's in the picture so maybe it was a trade and I didn't know it. I replaced the vices old wood with new and it's very handy but the draw knife would do a better job than the samari sword. About the sword. A WWII vet friend of mine gave me the section of sword after he cut it into three pieces. It was from WWII and it's a shame that it was cut up. I guess the guy that owned the sword didn't get his tool back either. Anyone else miss their tools?

| Hi Vergil, I've loaned tools to carver friends while at our carving meetings. Never actually let someone take my tools home with them. In your case sort of sours you on loaning your tools out huh. I love your little chair--looks like each leg is a different limb. Hope you'll share your new project progress with us. Kathy

Hi Vergil, I don't go to the carving club anymore and carve by myself now. No one to borrow or loan tools to. When I have tools I don't use I give them away, usually to a handyman I know.

I loaned a brother my draw-knife once. When I went to get it back a few weeks later I found it was being used to hold a window open in his basement. That was the last time I ever loaned a tool.

My son in law has a sander for the last 2 years, and my surface planer for the last 2 months. Next time I go up to see him I'll have to remember my dad's line. He used to stop in at someone's house that had borrowed a tool and ask if they heard the crying, he told them it was his tool crying to come home.

I have a friend and we loan each other tools and when it's time to return we say "can I borrow my _______ (fill in the blank) back?" Maybe that would work for you. Good luck,

I have not loaned out carving tools other than at meetings and such. I am afraid that I might need them. I have loaned out other tools and virtually all of them have been returned. My problem is in loaning out books. Many of the books I have cost more than a carving tool. So far, all of them have found their way back to me. Recently, I have moved my library (about 200 books not counting periodicals) to my new carving building and have become aware of the extent of the collection. I think I am going to check Amazon and identify the books that are no longer in print and mark them as "in house use only". I am also becoming concerned about my periodicals. I have a complete set of Wood Carving Illustrated and Carving Magazine. Chip Chats and Wildfowl Carving reach back 15-20 years. Many of these are no longer available for purchase. What happens if one is not returned? Although I know the practice is questionable; I am thinking about scanning/printing the information and giving it to the person interested rather than loaning out my irreplaceable books. Totem, I also like your stool! and the nice target in the background.Although it looks like you missed it as it don't have any holes in it.

Once, a long time ago, in our little carving group where I started.....I loaned a large Henry Taylor V gouge to my carving teacher. I think he must have let someone else in the group use it as I cannot imagine him doing the damage to my tool that was done to it. He returned it to me with a pretty large chunk of the blade edge broken out of it!! He never said a word about it either.... I don't really think he knew it was there, because he didn't do it. I was not happy but I didn't say anything to him....he is like a second father to me. I took the tool home and had to grind the edge down past the break and re sharpen the whole thing from scratch. A couple of hours work for me. So, unfortunately, I would probably not loan out anymore gouges to other members of the carving group anymore. I have yet to figure out a way to get out of it gracefully, if asked.....but I will think of something. |
