Default Ever carve the same carving over, and over again?

I keep carving this same santa thing, (I never have finished 1 yet) and I keep getting to an area where I think of a different way of producing what the author is showing in the book, so I cut that peice off the block and carve it again. Does anyone here carve the same peice over and over again to get it perfect or near perfect? Just wondering again...

The first time I do a pattern, it's wonderful! Lots of fun! A real challenge to convert a drawing into a 3D carving.
The second time I do the same pattern, it's good - I correct a couple of minor mistakes and do it quite a bit faster.
The third time I do the same pattern, it goes well, is even faster, but it's only...ok.
The fourth time I do the same pattern, it still goes well, and is still faster, but I'm bored the whole time.
The fifth time I do the same pattern, it still goes well, and is still faster, but it's incredibly boring.
The sixth time...there is no sixth time, and I don't care if my wife's cousin doen't get one of these carvings for Christmas; I'm not doing another one.

I try to never carve the same piece unless it is requested by a customer with cash. I carve mostly cottonwood bark and I try to find a new image in each piece.

I've been carving the same thing over and over for the ornament exchange. I find that my pieces are getting better the more that I carve them. Plus I get work on things like eyes, noses.......I like a change sometimes, but I am like Goody, I like carving Santas so I don't mind it!

BC,

Nothing wrong with carvung the same thing as long as you like doing it, go for it. If you get bored, or need variety, then switch off to something related to wood carving or just carve something different. As far as not finishing something, I have had carvings sitting here for almost two years, and I'm just getting around to finishing them. Another thought is maybe you just want to do roughouts. Apparently, there's money in it--there are plenty of vendors doing. Best part of roughouts--no painting!!! Another idea--I'm just full of 'em today--maybe you and HiHo should go into business together. You rough 'em out, and HiHo finishes 'em. Now you just need somebody who likes to paint!

I hear what you're saying on the painting Dave. I haven't done any painting, so I'm thinking of not going down that road, and just caot the carvings to protect them, and that's all. But I'm up in the air on that...

Carving the same thing over and over is okay I guess but look at it this way......

If God was completely satisfied with the first copy look where we'd all be? A world with no Women!! Maybe a little variety or a change here and there is a "good thing", as that ex-jailbirdess would say.

I have my hip wadders on so I will wade in to this Thread.

Be your own man and carve waht you want, If it is roughouts, with a knife, roughouts with other tools, Originals with what ever, Which It is closely becomeing Impossible to carve an original, somewhere, someone has done it before.. Cave what you want and don't worry about what peole think or says.
I carve what I want, when I want. If ya like it fine, if ya don't, You deal with it.

It boils down to preference.
I have carved the same patteren before but no two have came out the same or three or four or five. Look at Goody's, uses the same
Pattern and no two are the same. Subtle differences in a pair. That is what is so neat about his carvings and Anna's Paint, to die for.
A friend summed it up best in a seminar, "He carves for himself and he didn't give a hang what people thought of them". Not a direct quote, but close.More power to him.
So BC, carve what you want, with whatever device you want. Paint it or don't. If you like it fine. If you don't try carving to the way you want it.
As for perfect,, LOL not in this world. Haven't seen a perfect carving yet.
JMHO and to me, The only one that counts. Smile
